Understanding your child's next step in the Dutch education system

One of the first things many international parents discover when their child reaches Group 8 is that the Dutch education system works differently from many other countries. Instead of children following one general secondary school pathway, students receive advice about the type of secondary education that best matches their development.

And suddenly parents hear words like VMBO, HAVO, VWO, mixed advice, school levels, open days, applications. It can feel overwhelming, especially if you grew up in a different education system. The good news? You do not need to understand everything immediately. This guide explains the basics and, most importantly, what these pathways mean for your child.

Why does the Netherlands have different secondary school pathways?

The Dutch education system is designed around the idea that children learn differently and develop at different speeds. The goal is not to place children into a "better" or "worse" category — it's to find the environment where they can be successful, challenged, and confident. A child who feels comfortable and motivated often performs better than a child placed in a level that creates constant pressure.

What is VMBO?

VMBO stands for Voorbereidend Middelbaar Beroepsonderwijs — a secondary education pathway with a strong practical and vocational focus. Students combine theory with practical learning and preparation for further vocational education. VMBO can lead to MBO education, vocational careers, and further study opportunities. VMBO is not "less successful" — many important professions and successful careers begin through practical education pathways.

What is HAVO?

HAVO stands for Hoger Algemeen Voortgezet Onderwijs. It prepares students for higher professional education (HBO) and applied university programs, balancing theoretical learning with preparation for practical higher education.

What is VWO?

VWO stands for Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs. It prepares students for university education — a more academically oriented pathway with a stronger focus on theoretical learning.

What about combined advice?

Sometimes schools give advice such as VMBO/HAVO or HAVO/VWO. This means the school sees potential across two levels, giving children more flexibility and time to continue developing — especially common because children don't all develop at exactly the same pace.

The question many parents ask: "Which level is the best?"

This is probably the most common misunderstanding for international families. The answer: the best level is the one where your child can grow. A child who feels confident, challenged, and motivated can achieve much more than a child who feels constantly behind. Success is not only about the highest possible pathway — it's about finding the right match.

How is the advice decided?

Schools consider learning results over several years, mathematics skills, reading comprehension, language development, motivation, independence, and learning behaviour. The Doorstroomtoets is one part of the process. It does not define your child.

What can international parents do?

• Ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask the teacher: why is this advice recommended, what strengths does my child have, what areas need development, what can we do at home? Teachers are used to explaining the process to families.
• Focus on your child's strengths. Children are not only their grades. Ask: what makes my child curious, what gives them confidence, what type of learning environment helps them shine?
• Support confidence during the transition. The move to secondary school is a big emotional step. Children are not only choosing a school — they are building a new identity. The message they need most: "you are capable, we believe in you."

Een van de eerste dingen die veel internationale ouders ontdekken wanneer hun kind groep 8 bereikt, is dat het Nederlandse onderwijssysteem anders werkt dan in veel andere landen. In plaats van dat kinderen één algemeen traject in het voortgezet onderwijs volgen, krijgen leerlingen advies over het type onderwijs dat het beste bij hun ontwikkeling past.

En dan hoor je ineens woorden als VMBO, HAVO, VWO, gemengd advies, schoolniveaus, open dagen, aanmeldingen. Het kan overweldigend voelen, zeker als je zelf in een ander onderwijssysteem bent opgegroeid. Het goede nieuws: je hoeft niet meteen alles te begrijpen. Deze gids legt de basis uit — en vooral, wat deze trajecten voor jouw kind betekenen.

Waarom heeft Nederland verschillende trajecten in het voortgezet onderwijs?

Het Nederlandse onderwijssysteem is gebouwd rond het idee dat kinderen verschillend leren en zich in verschillend tempo ontwikkelen. Het doel is niet om kinderen in een "betere" of "slechtere" categorie te plaatsen. Het doel is de omgeving te vinden waarin ze succesvol, uitgedaagd en zelfverzekerd kunnen zijn. Een kind dat zich prettig en gemotiveerd voelt, presteert vaak beter dan een kind dat in een niveau zit dat continu druk geeft.

Wat is VMBO?

VMBO staat voor Voorbereidend Middelbaar Beroepsonderwijs — een traject met een sterk praktische en beroepsgerichte focus. Leerlingen combineren theorie met praktisch leren en voorbereiding op vervolgonderwijs in het mbo. VMBO leidt tot mbo-opleidingen, praktijkberoepen en verdere studiemogelijkheden. VMBO is geen "minder succesvol" traject — veel belangrijke beroepen en succesvolle carrières beginnen via praktijkgerichte onderwijstrajecten.

Wat is HAVO?

HAVO staat voor Hoger Algemeen Voortgezet Onderwijs. Het bereidt leerlingen voor op hoger beroepsonderwijs (hbo) en gaat meestal verder in hbo-opleidingen of praktijkgerichte universitaire programma's. HAVO combineert theoretisch leren met voorbereiding op praktisch hoger onderwijs.

Wat is VWO?

VWO staat voor Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs. Het bereidt leerlingen voor op universitair onderwijs en is een meer academisch gericht traject met een sterkere focus op theoretisch leren.

Wat betekent een gecombineerd advies?

Soms geven scholen advies zoals VMBO/HAVO of HAVO/VWO. Dit betekent dat de school potentieel ziet op twee niveaus. Het geeft kinderen meer flexibiliteit en tijd om zich verder te ontwikkelen — dit komt vaak voor, omdat kinderen niet allemaal exact hetzelfde tempo hebben.

De vraag die veel ouders stellen: "welk niveau is het beste?"

Dit is waarschijnlijk het meest voorkomende misverstand bij internationale gezinnen. Het antwoord: het beste niveau is het niveau waarop je kind kan groeien. Een kind dat zich zelfverzekerd, uitgedaagd en gemotiveerd voelt, kan veel meer bereiken dan een kind dat zich voortdurend achter voelt lopen. Succes gaat niet alleen over het hoogst mogelijke traject — het gaat over de juiste match vinden.

Hoe wordt het advies bepaald?

Scholen kijken naar meerdere factoren: leerresultaten over meerdere jaren, rekenvaardigheden, begrijpend lezen, taalontwikkeling, motivatie, zelfstandigheid en leergedrag. De Doorstroomtoets is één onderdeel van dit proces. Hij bepaalt je kind niet.

Wat kunnen internationale ouders doen?

• Stel vragen. Wees niet bang om de leerkracht te vragen: "waarom wordt dit advies aanbevolen? Welke sterke punten heeft mijn kind? Welke gebieden hebben ontwikkeling nodig? Wat kunnen we thuis doen?" Leerkrachten zijn gewend om dit proces aan gezinnen uit te leggen.
• Focus op de sterke punten van je kind. Kinderen zijn meer dan hun cijfers. Vraag: "waar wordt mijn kind nieuwsgierig van? Wat geeft mijn kind vertrouwen? In welk soort leeromgeving bloeit mijn kind op?"
• Ondersteun vertrouwen tijdens de overgang. De stap naar het voortgezet onderwijs is een grote emotionele stap. Kinderen kiezen niet alleen een school — ze bouwen een nieuwe identiteit. De boodschap die ze het meest nodig hebben: "je kunt dit, we geloven in je."

Een woord van een ouder

Toen ik meer begon te leren over het Nederlandse schoolsysteem, realiseerde ik me iets belangrijks: het moeilijkste deel was niet alleen het begrijpen van de regels. Het was mijn kind helpen zich zelfverzekerd te voelen tijdens een periode vol verandering. Daarom bestaat In Galop — want voorbereiding zou niet alleen over het oefenen van vaardigheden moeten gaan.
